FLINT, MI – The Salvation Army is looking to help underprivileged families during the holiday season, as the organization accepts applications for Christmas assistance from Wednesday, November16, through Friday, 18th, at its Flint location.

The Salvation Army’s Christmas assistance program is intended to help those who “would otherwise be unable to celebrate Christmas,” representatives said.

According to recent Census data, municipalities such as Mt. Morris (28.6 percent), Mt. Morris Township (30.4 percent) and Flint (38.2 percent) have the highest poverty rates in the county, but poverty is still present in places such as Grand Blanc (10.3 percent), Fenton (11.1 percent) and Davison (18.8 percent).

Required Documentation for 2016 Christmas Assistance

The Salvation Army’s Christmas Assistance program is intended to help Genesee County residents who would otherwise be unable to celebrate Christmas.  Children over 14 years of age are not eligible for toys.  Families may apply to only one agency for Christmas Assistance.  No changes can be made to the application once it has been submitted. 

To sign up for assistance you must have the following documents with you.  NO EXCEPTIONS.

  • Current Michigan I.D. or Drivers License and Social Security Cards for ALL adults in the household  
  • Proof of dependents in the home - Birth Certificates and Social Security Cards. Must be parent or provide proof of legal guardianship.
  • Current Bills for the last 30 daysBills must contain the name and address of the individual applying for assistance. Current bills include Rent, Mortgage, Water, Gas, Electric, Telephone, Cable, etc.
  • Proof of Income for the last 30 days - Pay stubs, Child Support Statement, Social Security, SSI, SSDI, DHS Statement, Unemployment/Workman’s Comp, etc.

You must have all the information listed above at the time of your application or you will be asked to leave and return with the required documentation.
