September is National Preparedness Month-an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of making an emergency plan for you and your family in the event of disaster. The Salvation Army recognizes the importance of being prepared and is dedicated to ensuring our ability to respond quickly and efficiently to disasters of any kind.
The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services vary depending upon a community’s unique situation and the magnitude of the disaster. Your donations are crucial in helping us provide the necessary resources for communities in need. Services include providing food and hydration, emergency shelter, clean-up supplies, emergency communications, as well as emotional and spiritual care.
Each year, The Salvation Army responds to dozens of man-made and natural disasters across the United States and provides relief for approximately 1-2 million disaster survivors and first responders. These services are funded entirely by donors, and The Salvation Army uses 100% of all disaster donations in support of disaster relief operations.
Ever wonder how your donations make a difference for communities in crisis? Check out this powerful video about the aftermath of the devastating tornado that leveled the community of Joplin, MO in 2011.
With the help of supporters, The Salvation Army was on site in less than two hours meeting the needs of survivors and first responders in Joplin. And in the two years since, The Salvation Army has utilized disaster recovery case managers to work along with local, state, and federal organizations to provide a FEMA funded personal recovery planning and financial help for 560 tornado affected families.
Every family’s situation is different. That’s why monetary donations are the best way to help support The Salvation Army during a disaster. It allows disaster responders to act immediately to meet the unique and specific needs of disaster survivors.
