Today was the 3rd annual Julian King Hatch Day event sponsored by Chicago’s very own singer and actress Jennifer Hudson along with her sister.

The pair handed out free school supplies to children in need.

It took place at the Salvation Army’s Ray and Joan Kroc Community Center in the West Pullman neighborhood on the south side.

The event continues to grow each year because of the need.

The event is in memory of Hudson’s nephew Julian who was murdered along with Hudson’s mother by Julia Hudson’s estranged husband in 2008.

An estimated 5000 youngsters from kindergarten through 12th grade were helped during today’s school supplies handout.
