The city of Omaha, University of Nebraska at Omaha fraternity members and The Salvation Army are teaming up to help stock two food pantries in Nebraska's largest city.

The city's food drive begins March 11 and runs through April 12. City employees are asked to help fill designated food bins in city offices.

In the midst of that effort, members of UNO's Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity will hold their annual "Just Can It" food drive and homelessness awareness event. From April 1-5, students will sleep outdoors at Crossroads Mall in cardboard homes and accept donations of money and non-perishable food. The donations go to The Salvation Army's two food pantries in Omaha.

The Salvation Army says it has seen nearly a 20 percent increase in requests for food from 2011.
