National Salvation Army Donut Day-Sprinkle Spectacular Event

Each year on the first Friday in June, people participate in National Doughnut Day. And in case you didn't know, the Salvation Army Lassies are the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during WWI.

On June 4th, the Salvation Army in Kalamazoo kicked off their celebration with their annual Donut Eating Contest. Corps Officers Majors Ronnie and Bridgette Amick and their wonderful staff, also led activities including a donut walk, face painting and children were also able to frost their own donut, even though there was more eating than frosting.

“This is just a way for us, to recognize The Salvation Army’s history and involvement with the donut,” said Major Ronnie Amick. “And to celebrate and have a little fun with it.”

Six competitors took part in the contest. Each person had 10 minutes to eat a dozen donuts provided by Sweetwater Donut Mill. Each box contained the same type of donuts, six jelly filled, and six plain donuts.

By the end of the contest as Major Ronnie called time, only two contestants had almost finished. The winner, who traveled almost two hours to enter the competition, finished 11 and a half donuts and was awarded the Donut Eating Championship Belt.

To close out the evening, Jenn Quemada, The Kalamazoo Youth and Child Program Coordinator, served as a human donut. While she stood in a plastic wading pool, her husband and two children each climbed a ladder to pour donut toppings on her including blue frosting, cookie crumbles and sprinkles.

On Friday,June 7th  The Kalamazoo Salvation Advisory Board members, staff and soldiers will also be out delivering donuts to first responders as a thank you for all they do.
