The Salvation Army in Kalamazoo Extends Emergency Support Following Severe Weather

May 9, 2024

On Tuesday, May 7, severe weather which included reported tornados caused damage to the community in Kalamazoo.

In response, The Salvation Army of Kalamazoo's Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) Team mobilized to provide support to affected individuals and first responders. They served food and ensured access to vital resources was available.

Operations focused on three critical sites, each playing a pivotal role in the emergency response efforts. Two of them, Pavilion Estates and Oakbrook Estates, are fixed mobile feeding sites. The third site, located at First Assembly of God, houses our shower unit, providing essential shower facilities to those in need.

To enhance operational capacity, four pallets of supplies were delivered, containing clean drinking water and a variety of nutritious snacks.

Additionally, the EDS team actively supported local first responders, recognizing their tireless efforts in maintaining safety and order amid the storm's aftermath.

“Our Emergency Disaster Services Team is on the ground, working tirelessly to ensure that those affected by the severe weather and our local first responders receive the assistance they need," said Major Ronnie Amick, of The Salvation Army of Kalamazoo

Key statistics from the EDS’s operations demonstrate the significant impact of their efforts:

  • 639 meals served
  • 2475 drinks distributed
  • 727 snacks provided
  • 2 instances of emotional and spiritual care offered
  • 28 volunteer hours contributed

The Salvation Army invites community members to join in this effort. Monetary donations can be made here, and physical donations can be dropped off at our location at 1700 S. Burdick. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps us extend our reach and provide essential support to those in need. Physical donations needed include: Travel-size shampoo, soap/body wash, conditioner, brand-new towels, diapers, wipes, formula, toilet paper, flashlights, batteries, hand sanitizer, masks, and gloves.
