Mayor's Ring Off Includes $5,000 Match

Dec 16, 2022

The Salvation Army has just one week left in its annual Red Kettle Campaign, but thanks to an anonymous donor they will get a big boost on Tuesday, December 20. For one day only all donations put into the iconic Red Kettles will be doubled up to $5,000. The anonymous "Angel donor" behind the match is hopeful that the community will respond with equal generosity on one of the final days of the Christmas fundraising campaign.

December 20 is also the annual Mayor's Ring Off, when La Porte and Michigan City's mayors will be competing to see who can raise the most money for their local The Salvation Army. Mayor Tom Dermody will once again volunteer at the Red Kettle at Kroger from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mayor Dermody be joined by many friends and special guests throughout the day.

"These Red Kettle matches are such a blessing," said Major Charles Pinkston of The Salvation Army of La Porte. "We will be able to match gifts made not just at Mayor Dermody's kettle, but at kettles across the city. It's my hope that our wonderful donors will see that there is a match and will give just a little more to help their neighbors in need."

Residents of La Porte have increasingly looked to The Salvation Army for assistance as they face inflation, job loss, and other personal challenges. The Salvation Army has a goal of raising $85,000 this fall to continue addressing these increased needs in 2023. These funds make it possible to provide both emergency assistance and regular programs throughout the year for adults and children in the community.

Shoppers looking for a Red Kettle this weekend will find bell ringers at Walmart, Kroger, Kabelin's, the U.S. Post Office, and Al's. Anyone interested in volunteering to ring a bell this holiday season is invited to visit RegisterToRing.com and find a location, date, and time that works for their schedule. Volunteers are especially needed for Tuesday to keep the Red Kettles out for the entire day of the $5,000 match.

Every donation given to The Salvation Army through the annual Red Kettle Campaign provides help and hope to those in need, and all gifts stay right here in the community where it is given.
