Help Provide Relief for Those Displaced by the Gaylord Tornado

May 26, 2022

The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) has been called upon to help in the Gaylord tornado relief efforts. The nonprofit is working alongside the United Way, the Otsego County Fire Department and other local community partners to support individuals and families in need who have been displaced by the recent tornado activity and damage that took place on Friday, May 20.

EDS is aiding the community by helping families find long-term housing solutions, including providing financial support for extended stays at hotels and motels, long-term rentals, and more. Additional assistance includes providing vouchers for impacted individuals to gather donated essentials from the local Salvation Army thrift store. The nonprofit is also providing food, beverages and spiritual support to survivors and first responders.

“Natural disasters destroy local economies and devastate lives. The Salvation Army stands with the Gaylord community during this difficult time and is committed to helping those who were impacted get back on their feet,” said Matt Rowland, director of service extension for The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division. “If you’re in a position to give, please give generously. Every donation provides help and hope to Gaylord as the community recovers from the devastation of this disaster.”

The Salvation Army responds to calls for help from local authorities and becomes part of the Emergency Operation Center set up in times of disaster. The Salvation Army’s emergency staff and volunteers are trained both in food service and Critical
Incident Stress Management.

As the recovery continues, EDS remains committed to providing support and sending prayers to all those affected. For more information, visit salmich.org
