Detroit Pistons Makes a Difference at Downriver Toy Shop

Every year, Salvation Army Corps Community Centers across Southeast Michigan host Toy Shops to spread cheer to local families in need. These events feature donated toys attendees can take home to their children to brighten Christmas morning.
On Tuesday, December 17 the Salvation Army’s Downriver Corps Community Center hosted their annual Toy Shop and were visited by former Detroit Pistons Coach Dwane Casey and his wife. UAW Local 600 and Cleveland Cliffs also financially supported the program.
The Caseys helped The Salvation Army distribute gifts to more than 800 Downriver families with children. In addition, Pistons owner Tom Gores generously donated $25,000, ensuring more local children experience Christmas joy this season.
“The holiday season is a special time filled with hope and cheer,” said Gores.
“No one deserves the wonder and excitement the holidays bring more than children, who light up with joy when they open something that makes them smile. Since beginning this initiative 18 years ago, the impact and reach of these distributions continue to grow, thanks to the dedication of our amazing partners. We are grateful for their support.”

“The Salvation Army Downriver would like to thank Tom and Holly Gores for helping us provide gifts for over 800 Downriver families with children,” said Lt. Shawn Sutter.
“We thank them for bringing the holiday spirit to the Downriver communities and showing our children the act of giving without expecting anything in return.”
Also distributed at the Downriver Corps Community Center and many others across southeast Michigan, were Bountiful Boxes packed by Bank of America volunteers. These boxes contain food for a complete Christmas dinner to make sure no one goes hungry during the most magical time of the year.
We are grateful for the generous support of the Casey’s, Tom Gores, Bank of America, and the many volunteers who made this toy shop possible. If you are inspired to follow their example and help The Salvation Army’s mission to Do The Most Good, you can volunteer or donate.
