When individuals and families struggle to overcome challenges like unemployment, lack of education and unstable housing, the Pathway of Hope program can help them take action to meet their needs and achieve their full potential. The corps community centers throughout Michigan are prepared to set everyone who comes through our doors on a route toward stability and self-sufficiency.
For those looking to escape extreme cold, intense heat, torrential rain, or just wanting a safe, quiet place to spend the night, we provide a free meal, a warm bed and a clean shower. Anyone in need can find shelter from us across Michigan.
The Salvation Army Great Lakes Division provides emergency assistance to help with mortgage/rent, utility bills, clothing, and other needs in order to keep individuals and families in their homes. For more information or support, find a location near you or learn more.
Our Bed & Bread Club provides a warm, nutritious meal 365 days a year and a safe place to stay to individuals and families across Michigan. In addition, in the City of Detroit our Bed & Bread trucks make nearly 60 stops where individuals can receive a nutritious meal, coats, gloves and blankets.
More than a quarter of LGBTQIA+ Americans are food insecure and rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Food boxes may include shelf-stable pantry items, breads, cereals, meat and other household necessities. For more information, contact a Corps Community and Worship Center near you.
Despite progress toward hiring equality, LGBTQIA+ Americans often lack access to educational resources, counseling services, and vocational training to help them obtain well-paying jobs. The Salvation Army offers job skills training and employment referrals for adults. This program is included in the substance rehabilitation program, and through some Salvation Army corps community centers.
The Harbor Light is an intense, inpatient substance abuse treatment and rehabilitation program. One of the most respected programs in the country, Harbor Light provides transitional services and employment training to help clients overcome their addiction and successfully transition back into their communities.
The Adult Rehabilitation Centers provide intense work-based substance abuse therapy for a minimum of six months. Clients live onsite and work in Salvation Army thrift stores, and participate in a full range of treatment programs.

The Salvation Army is one of the largest – if not the largest – non-governmental providers of services to the LGBTQ+ community. We know that discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals can make them particularly vulnerable, and we have many programs and resources across the country that aim to serve the unique needs of LGBTQ+ people:
- In Las Vegas, we have a dorm that is exclusively for transgender individuals.
- In Minneapolis, the Harbor Light Center shelters approximately 550 individuals every night, and it’s estimated that 20% of those people are members of the LGBTQ+ community.
- In Houston, our Young Adult Resource Center provides day shelter to young adults who are homeless, many of whom identify as LGBTQ+.
- In Baltimore, we work with the city to meet a growing need among transgender individuals who are trafficked.
