The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. The theology of the Salvation Army is derived from that of Methodism, however, the Army's doctrine is otherwise typical of holiness churches in the Wesleyan–Arminian tradition.
Our History
December 1888 -- The Salvation Army arrives in Ottumwa, Iowa.
January 1889 -- The first pastor for The Salvation Army arrives and begins to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the community. In those days The Salvation Army was met with hostility, but with much prayer, help from the Holy Spirit and the faithfulness of its mission, The Salvation Army has continued to meet the needs of the community for more than 132 years.
Over the years, The Salvation Army offered many different programs for seniors, youth and families under the leadership of several ordained pastors, who brought their own vision to Ottumwa. The Salvation Army occupied several different locations in Ottumwa and now currently resides at 505 West Main St.
2014 -- The Salvation Army closed its church but returned within a year to meet human needs in Ottumwa and Wapello County – which are among the poorest areas in Iowa – in His name.
September 2019 – Joel and Ramona Arthur were assigned to church plant for The Salvation Army.
September 2020 – The church is named Centerpoint church: A Ministry of The Salvation Army, a name that makes geographical, cultural and spiritual sense for the Ottumwa community.
