A Plea to God

Sep 15, 2023

"I would wake up in the morning and I just didn't want to be alive. I drank anything I could get my hands on, used anything I could get my hands on, numbing myself to the point where I didn't have to worry about how I felt.” Death was knocking on Jerome Davis’ door. Under the grip of alcohol and drug addiction, he had lost the desire to live. “I didn't like my life,” he continued, “so one day I said the most sincere prayer you could possibly imagine. I asked God if he didn't change my life to just take it. And then I called Harbor Light.”

Addiction treatment was nothing new for Jerome, who at age 35 had been in and out of recovery centers for years. But with the love of Christ at the center of its comprehensive approach to care, Davis experienced a very different outcome at The Salvation Army’s Harbor Light Center in Indianapolis. “I wasn't a one hit wonder,” he said. “I didn't get it the first time. It took it took multiple attempts for me [to get sober].” Clients at Harbor Light have a whole team that includes physicians and nurses, case managers, care coordinators, and pastors who provide them with strength and support throughout their recovery.

“We believe it's our responsibility to treat clients with a love that reflects God's love towards us, and that's with care, compassion, empathy and forgiveness,” explained Dr. Alicia Hoskins, Executive Director of Harbor Light. “We help them to become better versions of themselves through quality, comprehensive treatment and holistic care. It’s great to see them start to fit those recovery tools in their tool belt. They're moving to transitional housing, gaining a sponsor employment, going back to school, reunifying with their children, rebuilding bridges that were once broken, successfully reintegrating back into their communities. What a blessing for us to be a part of their journey to recovery.”

Jerome credits the spiritual aspects of his treatment with helping him achieve sobriety. “I'm just grateful the Harbor Light was there,” he shared. “I always knew about God; I just never had a relationship with him. Harbor Light offered an environment where I was able to cultivate that relationship."
