Ben Davis receives 700 coats from Salvation Army's Coats for Kids Initiative
The Coats for Kids initiative is not just an October event. It’s an ongoing effort to bring warmth to anyone across the Indianapolis area. When Ben Davis Ninth Grade Center clothing boutique needed more coats, The Salvation Army of Central Indiana donated 700 to the student-led initiative.
The Clothing Boutique is run by a group of dedicated students who volunteer their time and energy to manage the operations, from organizing the donations to helping their peers find the right fit.
Ben Davis Ninth Grade Center Principal Dominic Day expressed the donation would make a big impact for students. He said he has observed many students getting on and off the bus without coats.
“There are many families in Wayne Township School district that will benefit from the generous coat donations,” said Danny Hoskins, Social Services Director of The Salvation Army of Central Indiana. “These donations have the potential to remove some of those financial stressors that occasionally come with the Holiday Season.”
These coats were made available through donations and extra coats from the Coats for Kids event October 14th with WTHR and Classic Cleaners. That event helped dress 4,000 children in Central Indiana to provide a bit of warmth during the winter.
The Clothing Boutique is more than just a place to find a warm coat or pair of shoes. School officials say it’s a symbol of community, generosity and student empowerment. They say it’s a place where students can learn firsthand the joy of service, the importance of community and the impact they make in the lives of the years, all values The Salvation Army of Central Indiana teaches.
