Successful Red Kettle location site will host the annual Red Kettle Kickoff with donuts, hot cider, The Salvation Army band, and more!

 MADISON, WI – November 7, 2017

After ending a successful “Sharing for the Shelter” campaign that brought in hundreds of blankets, towels, sheets, and toiletries for the rising number of clients staying at The Salvation Army’s downtown shelters, the Red Kettle Kickoff begins with the intent to purchase specialty folding twin beds, and more in support of programs and services run year round. A goal of $525,000 has been set which Salvation Army staff say is necessary in order to maintain the level of services provided, and to make an even greater push for the DAWNS program.

“The immediate success of DAWNS in getting families into their own, permanent homes inspired us to open the program up to single women,” says Melissa Sorensen, Director of Social Services at the shelter location on East Washington. Through DAWNS, a housing first program, 39 families have already moved from chronic homelessness to their very own homes. “If we keep this momentum going, we could help change the lives and situations of so many people right here in Dane County,” she continued.

The kickoff, beginning at 10 AM, will showcase The Salvation Army Band, “Donut Girls” depicting historical Salvation Army lassies known for passing donuts to soldiers on the frontlines as a tribute to Veterans Day, and hot cider and delicious donuts. The campaign is the largest fundraiser of the year for the Army and will require “all hands on deck” to viably support programs such as DAWNS.

With so much on the line, it is imperative that bell ringing shifts are filled as much and as often as possible. Four Saturday Match Days have been set for the final weeks of ringing in December that can help boost the campaign: Dec. 2 will be matched by National Guardian Life; Dec. 9 will be matched by McFarland State Bank; Dec. 19 will be matched by Associated Bank; and the very last day Dec. 23 will be matched by American Transmission Company.

The Christmas Red Kettle Campaign runs from November 10 through December 23. There are roughly 80% of shifts open and available to be picked up. For more information on Adopt-A-Kettle or individual ringing shifts, go to salvationarmydanecounty.org or ringbells.org to sign up.
