The Salvation Army Western Division Accelerates Efforts to Reach Those Affected by Floods

After a week of relief operations in Nebraska, South Dakota and western Iowa, The Salvation Army Western Division is continuing to accelerate its efforts to reach people affected by the floods. 

As of Thursday, March 22, Western Division units have served more than 4,500 meals, more than 5,600 drinks and more than 6,500 snacks. In addition, they have provided emotional and spiritual care to approximately 400 people. Within a roughly six-day timespan, volunteers have put in more than 1,300 hours of work.

The following is a summary of the Army's most recent efforts in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa: 

In Omaha -- On Thursday, March 21, The Kroc Center provided more than 350 meals in support of Sarpy County shelters, and the team there is scheduled to bring bottled water to the Hawaiian Village community on Friday, March 22. The operation at the old Canfield’s building opened with a new name on Thursday, March 21 -- the Disaster Resource Center -- and transitioned to operating primarily as a distribution center for flood-relief items. Hours for the Disaster Resource Center have expanded to Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m.-5 p.m. 

In Sioux City -- The team served approximately 600 snacks and 300 drinks and provided emotional and spiritual care on Thursday, March 21.

In Council Bluffs -- Corps officers and staff will deliver cleaning supplies, food, toys and other items to Hamburg, Iowa, on Friday, March 22. They will also assist with flood-relief efforts in Bartlett, Iowa, on Friday, March 22.. 
  
In Norfolk -- Officers, staff and volunteers delivered meals and clean-up kits to nearby Battle Creek. 

In Fremont -- On Thursday, March 21, officers, staff and volunteers served lunch to more than 200 people and delivered bottled water to nearby communities.

In Sioux Falls -- The team served meals to a nonprofit search-and-rescue team.
