Through Music, Teen Discovers Confidence

Aug 11, 2014

Studies have shown that music enriches lives and help children perform better academically. The arts also help children develop critical thinking skills necessary for their future success.

Melissa Alonso, 14, has participated in The Salvation Army’s music program for three years and has seen not only her musical skills improve, but also her self-esteem. “I have always been shy,” Alonso said. “But I’m less shy now. I feel more confident.”

Her confidence has shown through during several of her competitions. Last summer Alonso won first place for her trumpet solo, which helped secure a scholarship to attend The Salvation Army’s music camp in Boston. “I was amazed I won. I couldn’t believe it!”

Today, Melissa is a regular member of The Salvation Army East Chicago Corps Brass Band and The Salvation Army Metro Youth Band. She practices several times a week and performs Sundays during worship service.
