Salvation Army Receives Grant for Food Pantry

Mar 25, 2020

DeKalb Township has made a $5,000 donation to The Salvation Army of DeKalb County to support its increased efforts in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are so grateful to DeKalb Township for this added support,” said Major Angie Pennington, corps officer for The Salvation Army of DeKalb County. “We’re seeing more and more families coming to us for help in the wake of the State’s order to shelter-in-place. Being able to provide a food box for a family takes a burden off their shoulders.”

The donation will be used to make an additional order from the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The Salvation Army has seen a 30% increase in food pantry requests over last week and a 50% increase in emergency rental assistance funds.

“The Township has always been here to help assist people through challenging times. Right now, the whole community has challenges and needs so we are simply doing what we can to help more people, which includes helping resource our partner agencies who are working extremely hard to make sure that people have food and shelter,” says Jennifer Jeep Johnson, DeKalb Township Supervisor.

The Salvation Army is providing pre-packed food boxes with curb-side pickup Monday-Wednesday, 9 a.m. - Noon; and Thursday, 9 a.m. - Noon and 5 - 6:45 p.m. Emergency assistance and social services for those with hardship due to COVID-19 are available with appointment by calling 815.981.9111.
