Crescendo Detroit: Transforming Lives Through Music and Dance

Aug 3, 2022

Since 2013, Crescendo Detroit has transformed the lives of Detroit youth through their after-school program in collaboration with the Detroit Temple Corps Community Center.

Angel Ingram started Crescendo Detroit with her former high school band director, Damien Crutcher, when they recognized a need for the kids in the Detroit area to experience music. Together they expanded the program from a six-week program with 11 students, to now a five-month program where nearly 50 children participate in programs centered on instrumental music and dance.

“Music education saved my life,” expressed Crutcher. “I started playing French horn in high school and it changed the direction of my life. We want to make sure we offer all kids that opportunity.”

In addition to the music and dance focused programs, Crescendo Detroit offers literacy and life skills classes, homework support, and nutritious meals and snacks for students ages 5-18.

“It’s really just giving them something to look forward to once they get out of school,” said Ingram. “This is a safe haven for them where they can learn how to become a well-rounded citizen. We really pride ourselves on building character within the student. So we’re not just here to provide an after school activity—we are pouring ourselves into the children after school where we’re able to see their growth and development. We can see them shine with the morals that we’ve taught them.”

Offering the program at the Detroit Temple Corps Community Center allows The Salvation Army to fill any additional needs of a student or their family while they’re attending the after-school program such as access to the food pantry, financial assistance and spiritual comfort.

“This partnership has been great because we work together with the staff here,” said Ingram. “If there is a family here who is struggling, The Salvation Army can help us in those areas.”

Crescendo Detroit will begin again in September. Anyone who is interested in learning more about the program can reach out to Angel Ingram at crescendo.detroitcomm@gmail.com
