Metro Detroit Media Volunteer Virtually and In-Person for The Salvation Army’s Annual Celebrity Bell Ring Weekend
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (Dec. 2, 2021) — The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit’s annual fundraising event, Celebrity Bell Ring Weekend, will take a hybrid approach this year. More than 40 metro Detroit media personalities will do their part in-person and virtually to support the nonprofit’s Red Kettle Christmas Campaign starting Friday, Dec. 3 through Sunday, Dec. 5.
Throughout Celebrity Bell Ring Weekend, media personalities from Detroit-area television, radio and print outlets will work to raise money either from their own home or outside metro Detroit shopping locations. Each volunteer will have their own peer-to-peer fundraising page, which will act like a virtual red kettle to collect donations for clothing, gifts, holiday meals, and more while continuing to neighbors in need continuing to battle the impacts of pandemic poverty.
Celebrities will post pictures, videos and other engaging content to encourage members of the community to donate to their personal fundraising page or visit them at a physical red kettle location. At the conclusion of the weekend, the top three philanthropic celebrities will receive trophies for their fundraising efforts.

“The sound of bells ringing from storefront red kettles is a true sign of the Christmas season and The Salvation Army is so happy for the chance to return to in-person giving while also keeping the convenience of an online format,” said Major Timothy Meyer, general secretary and metro Detroit area commander (regional chief operating officer) for The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division. “We are thankful for the continued support year after year and we are grateful for the support we’re receiving from the media celebrities assisting in the Bell Ring Weekend this year.”
Donations collected through Celebrity Bell Ring Weekend and the Red Kettle Christmas Campaign benefit local families and individuals in the communities they are given. This year, donations are especially critical to help those impacted by COVID-19 through food, shelter, clothing, rent and utility assistance and more.
