May 3, 2018 is National Day of Prayer

World Day of Prayer is a worldwide, ecumenical movement of Christian women of many traditions who come together to observe a common day of prayer each year on the first Friday of May. The Salvation Army wholeheartedly participates in World Day of Prayer because it reflects our mission and ministry perfectly. Every one of our 29 Corps in the Metropolitan Division either held or participated in a World Day of Prayer service. In total, 550 women from our division participated in a World Day of Prayer this year.
Each year the World Day of Prayer Committee chooses a country to support with prayer and financial gifts. This year we supported the country of Suriname, so many of the church services were focused on learning about Suriname. The picture below is of the World Day of Prayer service at our Evanston Corps. The women dressed up in traditional Suriname clothing and enjoyed some food common to that country.
In Waukegan, prayer stations were set up to represent areas of interest in Suriname. Participants were invited to visit each station to read and pray.
The Mayfair Community Church of The Salvation Army joined together with five Korean churches in the Chicago area and met together for prayer, fellowship and education.
Each of our Corps had a special and unique way of celebrating this important day, but the theme and mission were the same. It was a time of “informed prayer and prayerful action” – which is the motto of World Day of Prayer. For more information about World Day of Prayer please visit wdp-usa.org.
