The Bucket Brigade One Month Earlier, on November 6, in The Most Important Christmas Kettle Campaign in FDL's 130 Year History

Summary: The Bucket Brigade celebrates its 20th Anniversary November 6, launching a month early with a $20,000 Michels Corporation match to help The Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign raise $170,000 and rescue Christmas for a community reeling from the emergency hardships posed by 2020.

At a time when almost half of its service area qualifies for assistance, The Salvation Army of Fond du Lac opens daily to serve the community as it has for 130 years – meeting human need, in His name, without discrimination.

This year’s ‘human need’ is climbing unlike any in the agency’s recent history.

The Salvation Army’s food pantry now sees itself stretching to serve 27,900 at year’s end(up from 18,000 last year) filling gaps created as other food programs & holiday meals suspend or stop because of the pandemic. Its warming shelter, Fond du Lac County’s only warming shelter, is working to open November 1, equipped with every COVID-19 adaption necessary to serve at capacity, even as the homeless population quadruples.

Newly unemployed and underemployed individuals seek out The Salvation Army in waves, many for the first time, many facing delayed eviction and foreclosure. Social Services Manager Crystal Ognan estimates each household needs an average of $1250 beyond The Salvation Army’s current funding capability to cover expenses that will keep them afloat through Christmas, with a roof overhead, warm clothes for their kids, a full gas tank, and food on the table 3x a day. “Based on the rate our numbers are escalating, up to 155% more will need our Christmas help this year,” Ognan continues.

This year, the 20th Annual Bucket Brigade launches a month early, on November 6, to help the Red Kettle Campaign raise $170,000 and rescue Christmas for those reeling from emergency hardships posed by 2020. Michels Corporation pledges a $20,000 match to donations received the day of or prior, online at, received at The Salvation Army (earmarked Bucket Brigade), 237 N. Macy St. “Contributing to the Bucket Brigade is a Michels holiday tradition because we believe in the Salvation Army’s compassionate mission and the way it has a direct, powerful impact on our community,” said Kevin Michels, Vice President, Michels Corporation. “Because the need this year is greater than ever, we hope our matching grant encourages others to embrace the Christmas spirit and give what they can.”

The Bucket Brigade members from KFIZ, 107.1 The Bull, The Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue Local 400, Michels Corporation and The Salvation Army will safely greet morning commuters who drive-up and donate from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on both the north and south ends of Fond du Lac, collecting at 254 Winnebago Drive as well as in The Shops at Cobblestone Square, 770 S. Main St. Santa and Mrs. Claus will appear also!

Major Jon Welch, The Salvation Army of Fond du Lac officer, finishes,” We are honored with the trust placed in us. This year’s Red Kettle Campaign is arguably the most significant campaign in our 130 year history serving Fond du Lac County. Together, we can launch a safe, successful Red Kettle Campaign  that celebrates our community’s ingenuity and resilience even in the face of desperation. With your help, we can Rescue Christmas and Restore Hope for the people of Fond du Lac County.”
