The Salvation Army feeds 3,000 Chicagoans on Thanksgiving Day
The Salvation Army and Levy join forces to feed 3,000 Chicagoans in need on Thanksgiving Day.
The meals were served at The Salvation Army Freedom Center in Humboldt Park and also delivered to hungry Chicagoans in communities across the city.
This partnership is nothing new – The Salvation Army and Levy have fed tens of thousands of Chicagoans on Thanksgiving during the past several years. This year, 700 meals were served at Freedom Center during sit-down service, and 2,300 hot-and-ready meals were distributed to-go or delivered via mobile outreach.
As always, each meal was made from scratch.
“Thanksgiving is a time of being thankful. Thankful for the loved ones around us and thankful for the food on the table,” said Captain Nikki Hughes, Corps Officer at The Salvation Army Freedom Center. “But for some, it’s a difficult time of the year. We open our doors for those who are experiencing difficult and hard times.” 
The amount of food and time needed to prepare the feast was impressive. One thousand six hundred pounds of turkey, 600 pounds of sweet potatoes, 500 pounds of cranberries, 300 pounds of green beans, 400 pounds of russet potatoes for mashed potatoes, 120 pounds of butter, and 60 pounds of breadcrumbs for dressing, all culminated in four days of prep work and cooking leading up to Thanksgiving Day.
