The Weekly Word - A Devotion for the Week of January 15

Jan 12, 2024

Verse: Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing, and perfect will.

Romans 12:2

Don’t let the world mold who you are; instead, focus your mind on the one true King!

In the book of Romans, Paul guides us to a life that aligns with God’s purpose and will. He starts the verse by saying, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world.” So often the world exerts pressure to conform to its values, priorities, and ways of thinking. However, as believers, we are called to resist this conformity.

God doesn’t want us to isolate ourselves from the world; instead, He wants us to make a deliberate choice to align our lives with the values of His kingdom. We can do this by focusing our attention on Jesus and His word.

In the second part of the verse, Paul says, “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” He’s telling us that transformation starts with the mind. Our thoughts, beliefs, and perspectives shape our actions and character. To be transformed is not a one-time event but an ongoing process. It involves surrendering our minds to God’s truth, allowing the Holy Spirit to work within us, and cultivating a heart that seeks after God’s wisdom.

A transformed mind enables us to grasp the broader perspective of God’s plan. Through prayer and a deepening relationship with God, we gain insight into His good, pleasing, and perfect will. This discernment empowers us to make choices that honor God and contribute to His redemptive work in the world.

As we live with transformed minds, we become vessels of God’s grace and agents of positive change in a broken world.
