Salvation Army Metropolitan Division Receives Grant for Coronavirus Response

Mar 27, 2020

The Salvation Army Metropolitan Division has received a $250,000 grant from the Chicago Community COVID-19 Response Fund, a joint venture of The Chicago Community Trust, the United Way Metro Chicago, and the City of Chicago. This new fund supports nonprofit organizations across the Chicagoland region that meet the immediate needs of people impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

In Chicago, where The Salvation Army has been named lead agency for mass care and mass feeding in the City’s coronavirus response, the funds will provide meals for those in quarantine and isolation, first responders, and homeless individuals. It will also provide additional cleaning and healthcare at the Army’s homeless shelters, Shield of Hope and Evangeline Booth Lodge.

In both the city and suburbs, the grant will provide food and other essentials for food pantries located at Army corps community centers throughout the area, as well as emergency rent and utility assistance for people with lost wages or employment due to closures and cancellations caused by the coronavirus.

“On behalf of The Salvation Army Metropolitan Division and the five million people we anticipate serving during the coronavirus, we want to thank The Chicago Community Trust and the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago for the generous support,” said Major Kjell Steinsland, General Secretary for the Salvation Army Metropolitan Division. “In this unprecedented time, as our community fights this pandemic, we thank you for partnering with The Salvation Army.”

The Salvation Army recognizes COVID-19 will have a long-term impact, and is prepared to assist for as long as necessary. But, public financial support is needed to ensure everyone is helped. Please donate at: SalArmyChicago.Org/Coronavirus.
