The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division Welcomes New Officers to Leadership Team

SOUTHFIELD,Mich., - The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division announces theappointment of two new officers to its Detroit Harbor Light System and threenew officers to its Metro Detroit Corps Community Centers.

TheSalvation Army has appointed Captain James Winkler as director of The SalvationArmy's Detroit Harbor Light System, and Captain Deborah Winkler as director ofwomen's ministries and pastoral care. The Winklers will oversee a broad rangeof emergency services for homeless men, women and families at the Harbor LightSystem including a veterans' transitional housing program.

In 1939The Salvation Army established the first Harbor Light in the world here inDetroit. That was the beginning of what would evolve into the largest drug rehabilitationprogram in the State of Michigan, which is now called The Salvation Army EasternMichigan Harbor Light System. There are three primary Harbor Light campuses:Detroit, Macomb County, and Monroe with a total bed capacity of 750. The HarborLight System is also the home of the Bed and Bread Club which serves more than1.7 million meals annually.

Winklerhas more than 14 years experience with The Salvation Army, and previouslyserved as director of the St. Louis Harbor Light Center. He holds a master'sdegree in social work from Jane Addams College of Social Work at the Universityof Illinois and a Master of Business Administration and certificate ofnonprofit management from Roosevelt University. Captain Deborah Winkler holds abachelor's degree in nursing from St. Louis University.

TheWinklers are residents of Farmington Hills.

Majors Kevinand Christie Van Zee have been appointed administrators of The Salvation Army'sWarren Corps Community Center. The Van Zees have been officers with the nonprofitfor more than 30 years, and have joined The Salvation Army Eastern MichiganDivision from North Platte, Nebraska. The Van Zees will direct all communityinitiatives, including food and shelter assistance, youth and senior programsand Christian education outreach, in addition to overseeing The Salvation ArmyMATTS Shelter (Macomb's Answer to Temporary Shelter), the largest facility ofits kind in Macomb County.

Kevin VanZee holds a Bachelor of Science degree in practical ministries from Olivet NazareneUniversity. Christie Van Zee holds a bachelor's degree in religion andphilosophy from Friends University in Wichita, Kan. and a Master of Arts inChristian ministry from North Park Theological Seminary in Chicago. The VanZees are residents of Center Line.

Finally,Major Marlys Anderson was appointed administrator of The Salvation Army'sFarmington Hills Corps Community Center. Major Anderson will provide leadershipat the Farmington Hills site, overseeing all activities. She is a resident ofFarmington Hills.

Andersonmost recently served as administrator ofThe Salvation Army' s Austin, Minn. location, a position she held forsix years. Anderson holds an associate occupational studies degree in ministryfrom The Salvation Army School for Officer Training.
