Summer Dreams

May 12, 2010

Kids look forward to the summer with great hopes and dreams and loads of excitement and enthusiasm. Many children served by The Salvation Army are able to realize those dreams with the help of the Detroit Free Press' annual Summer Dreams program.

The goal of the Summer Dream’s project is simple: provide fun and safe summertime experiences for kids across Michigan, experiences to change lives, memories to last a lifetime.

This summer marks the Detroit Free Press' 18th annual Summer Dreams program, which together with the Skillman Foundation raises money for summer camps that give kids opportunities to experience and enjoy life in new and exciting ways.

The Summer Dreams project helps Salvation Army Corps throughout Metro Detroit provide summer day camps for hundreds of children from homeless or low-income families. Many of the children the camps serve have never been camping or gone to a beach. They've never learned to kick a soccer ball or sing in front of an audience. They've never spent time away from home with other kids who face similar challenges.

To support the Summer Dreams project we need your help. Your donation, matched dollar-for-dollar by Skillman, helps kids who normally have so little hope, enough days filled with wonder and joys that children deserve. Your donations pay for baseballs, T-shirts, lunches, first-aid kits, arts and crafts, workbooks, park visits, field trips, backpacks, sporting and camp equipment, and many other things children enjoy and need during their camp experience. It also goes toward camp scholarships for kids in need, kids who desperately need uplifting experiences but whose parents can’t afford it.
