Annual Sporting Clay Event Aims High for The Salvation Army's Outdoor Programs for Kids

SOUTHFIELD, Mich., - The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit and Cabela's present the 5th annualSporting Clay Event to raise funds for The Salvation Army Outdoors (TSAO).

TSAO provides children with hands-on educational activities to develop a variety of outdoor skills, from camping to woodworking.

The public is invited to participate in the sporting clay tournament on Thursday, May 12 at The Detroit Gun Club (2775 East OakleyPark Road, Commerce Township). The event, which is sponsored in part by Moffat Partners, will offer a full day of activities including: challenging shooting games, a live auction featuring an AuSable River float excursion for two courtesy of Michael Johnson Riverguide, LLC, a Colorado bear hunting trip courtesy of Lisa Bennett from Wildskies, a Massachusetts striped bass fishing experience courtesy of RPM Outdoors and much more. Guests can also expect great prizes, and breakfast, lunch and the Detroit Gun Club's famous steak dinner.

The Sporting Clay Event is part of The Salvation Army's 6th annual "Doing the Most Good Week," May 9-14 in metro Detroit, and coincides with National Salvation Army Week. Doing the Most Good Week is unique to metroDetroit, and is designed to call attention to individuals and groups, who through their actions and donations are "Doing the Most Good" to help the communities in which they live and work. It's as easy as opening a door for someone, sharing a smile or making a donation to The Salvation Army. Keep in mind, a $250 donation - less than the price of some smartphones - can provide a child in need with a full week of summer camp with The Salvation Army. The tournament offers three flights to choose from: morning (9 a.m.), early-afternoon (noon) and mid-afternoon (3 p.m.). Shooting packages are $250 each or $1,250 for five shooters.

"This important fundraiser has raised more than $155,000 to help The Salvation ArmyOutdoors and given countless children in need what is often times their first experience with exploring Michigan's great outdoors," said Major John Turner, general secretary for The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit. "All money donated supply much-needed funding to provide outdoor recreational opportunities to get kids outside and active."

TSAO is an outdoor program designed to provide youth and their families with engaging and educational outdoor experiences through a diverse network of vested partners and friends. It introduces children to swimming, fishing, boating, climbing, archery, conservation, hiking and camping.
