97.9 WJLB to Host Virtual 37th Annual Coats for Kids Radiothon for The Salvation Army
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., (Oct. 23, 2020) — Detroit hip-hop and R&B radio station 97.9 WJLB will raise money to help The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit provide coats and other winter accessories to children in need for the 37th annual Coats for Kids Radiothon sponsored by Ford Motor Company Fund, the philanthropic arm of the automaker.
While in years past, Coats for Kids has had an in-person component, this year’s fundraiser will be held exclusively on-air from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7.
Listeners can donate online or text COAT to 24365. A donation of $25 will help provide a coat and other winter accessories to keep one child warm this winter. A donation of $15 will provide a hat and glove set.
Listeners can also drop off new coats – infant through adult sizes – at The Salvation Army’s Divisional Headquarters located at 16130 Northland Dr. in Southfield from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7.
“This year’s Coats for Kids fundraiser will protect the safety not only of those facing the bitter cold of a Michigan winter, but also our generous brothers and sisters who will be donating from the comfort of their home thanks to the fundraiser’s virtual radiothon structure,” said Major Tim Meyer, general secretary and metro Detroit area commander (regional chief operating officer) for The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division. “We are incredibly thankful for our partnership with WJLB, which has helped keep the community’s most vulnerable safe and warm for 37 years.”
Last year, Coats for Kids enabled The Salvation Army to purchase 1,620 coats and winter accessories to those in need in metro Detroit.
Families in need of winter coats and accessories for their children this season can contact their local Salvation Army corps community center for assistance. A complete listing of locations is available at salmich.org or by calling 248-443-5500.
