Success at the Salvation Army!

Feb 8, 2013

Recently, I was reading an article giving tips on how and why to give in times of crisis. The article was very informative, but it included some very important facts I feel the Salvation Army completely agrees with and executes to the fullest.

The first tip is to not let an unscrupulous charity take advantage of your goodwill. The Salvation Army could not be farther from this characterization. The Army guarantees that $0.85 of every dollar will go towards funding those who need it most. Forbes magazine once said that the Army is “by far the most effective organization in the U.S.”

Another tip is to find a charity with a proven track record of success with dealing with the type of disaster and in the region in which the disaster occurred.  The Salvation Army has a rock solid track record as far as taking care of the less fortunate is concerned. In 2011, the Salvation Army was involved in providing the needy of Metro Detroit with 322,937 meals, 666,101 nights of shelter, and 40 centers of service.

Yet another tip tells people to avoid fly-by-night charities created specifically to deal with the new crisis. The Army finds this statement laughable. We have been in existence for 148 years. In fact one of mantras is “Here for good”.

The authors of the article encourage the readers to seek out the charity’s official website to guarantee legitimacy. We have just a launched our new, up-to-date website with all the bells and whistles. Our website is not only legitimate and fully functioning, but also very informative with regularly updated news, blogs and social media posts

The final, but possibly most important tip, is to “consider the nature of the charities work”. The nature of our work is clearly and honestly laid out in our mission statement “The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination”.
