Bringing Hope and Help in the Midst of COVID-19 in Flint/Shiawassee

Apr 16, 2020

With a presence in almost every ZIP code in America, The Salvation Army is uniquely positioned to respond to the unique needs of people living in poverty. These challenges are exponentially magnified during times of crisis, including pandemics like coronavirus (COVID-19). Across the United States, we are stepping up to the challenge and continue to serve the most vulnerable populations in each community. This is just one of many stories of how we are meeting the needs of those who rely on The Salvation Army during difficult times.

On, Wednesday, March 25th, the Flint Citadel Corps Community Center started providing lunch for up to 125 volunteers at different locations across Genesee County, including volunteers working at the Genesee County Emergency Operation Centers (E.O.C.) sites: Emmanuel Church, Genesee County Jail, River Church Center of Hope Goodrich, Center of Hope Fenton, Calvary Church, A United Methodist Community, Mayfair Bible Church, and Eastside Mission. The Corps is preparing and delivering meals each day (M-F) to the volunteers who are delivering boxes of food to senior citizens and at-risk persons who are home bound and/or quarantined. Our local Walmart is helping to provide lunch once a week and continues to be a very valued partner in helping us give back to our community. MTA of Flint is providing Your Ride drivers and vehicles to help deliver lunches to all locations. Carl’s Appliance in Grand Blanc donated a side by side Refrigerator/Freezer. This will help us with much needed freezer and refrigerator space to keep the meat, vegetables and fruit fresh for distribution.

The Salvation Army of Flint has partnered with the Genesee County Sheriff Task Force in this time of crisis to respond to the direct requests for help from residents of our community impacted by the pandemic.  Residents can call the Genesee County Community Care Task Force (CCTF) information phone number (810-257-3422) leaving their name and phone number. Our volunteers are calling individuals to determine what assistance they are in need of and scheduling appointments for deliveries or providing referrals to local members of the task force.

Major Randy Hellstrom is in daily contact with Genesee County officials and non-profit groups to discuss the ever-changing pandemic situation in Flint and Genesee County. Every element of our services is being evaluated as need arises and continues to change. We are grateful for all our partners helping us "Do the Most Good" daily in Genesee County!
