Detroit Harbor Light Receives Visit from USA National Commander Kenneth Hodder

Oct 23, 2020

Wednesday, October 21 was a very special day for The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division. Commissioner Kenneth Hodder, National Commander of The Salvation Army USA, visited Detroit to tour the Harbor Light Center, meet with local National Advisory Board members, and learn more about how we serve our community.

At the Detroit Harbor Light, Commissioner Hodder was immersed in the breadth of programs offered, including Detroit Medical Respite for homeless individuals facing serious medical/health challenges; the William Booth Legal Aid Clinic, which offers legal counsel and advocacy for low-income families; and the Bed & Bread Club, which serves more than 1.3 million meals to Detroit residents a year.

After learning more about our programs, the Commissioner joined in the work by riding on one of the Bed & Bread trucks, ladling soup on the way to the Yorba Hotel. Once on site, Commissioner Hodder handed out cups of soup, hot dogs, and hats for those in need. The Yorba Hotel is just one of 57 stops that the Bed & Bread trucks make every day without fail, even during a pandemic. Commissioner Hodder saw first-hand how we serve and empower those with significant need, and we were overjoyed that he personally contributed to the mission.

“To see the many ways The Salvation Army serves suffering humanity in the Detroit area was tremendous,” said Commissioner Hodder. “To participate in the work on the front lines, especially during a pandemic, is both a privilege and a responsibility for those of us concerned with meeting human need in Jesus’ name without discrimination.”
