SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (Nov. 20, 2020)The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit is continuing its mission to Rescue Christmas in 2020 for metro Detroiters in need. On Giving Tuesday, which is slated for Tuesday, Dec. 1, all donations up to $25,000 will be doubled, thanks to the generosity of TCF Bank. Amounts donated at physical or virtual Red Kettles, as well as text-to-give, phone and online donations, will be fully matched, dollar for dollar.

Due to the economic hardships brought on by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, The Salvation Army’s ability to raise vital funds to serve those in need is at risk this year. Salvation Army supporters can safely donate to the nonprofit in a number of ways, including:

  • Texting GIFT to 24365

  • Using contactless Kettle Pay at physical red kettles via Apple Pay or Google Pay

  • Donating money via an online or physical red kettle

  • Visiting salmich.org

  • Calling 877-SAL-MICH

TCF Bank is committed to supporting and strengthening the communities it serves. Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit the U.S., the bank has partnered with a number of organizations across its footprint to ensure residents and businesses receive critical help through funding and other resources. Through volunteerism, direct giving, matching funds, and grants, TCF Bank continues to make people its priority.

“At TCF Bank, we stand behind our motto ‘What’s in it for We’ because we are committed to building stronger communities,” said David T. Provost, chief executive officer of TCF Financial Corporation. “What’s in it for one of us, is the same for all of us and that’s why we support The Salvation Army. The organization is the epitome of a strong community and is always ready to help anyone in need. We are honored to answer The Salvation Army’s call to Rescue Christmas.”

All donations made on Giving Tuesday will go toward The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit’s $8 million fundraising goal to Rescue Christmas for metro Detroiters in need. Funds raised will directly benefit communities throughout Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties – and contributions benefit and remain in the community from where the donation is received.

Proceeds from the 2020 Red Kettle Campaign will provide critical social services and programs to those in need, including feeding and sheltering, outdoor and educational opportunities for at-risk youth, anti-human trafficking initiatives, a free legal aid clinic, emergency disaster services, drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs and much more. A sustaining, $25 monthly gift helps support The Salvation Army’s much needed programs in a donor’s area, while one-time gifts up to $300 are being made 100 percent tax-deductible for the remainder of 2020, thanks to the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. This even applies for donors who use the standard deduction.

“The Salvation Army is there for anybody who needs it, and the services we offer to individuals and families in our community rely on the generosity of those in a position to give,” said Major Timothy Meyer, general secretary and metro Detroit area commander for The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division. “This partnership with TCF Bank will help bring The Salvation Army one step closer to reaching our $8 million fundraising goal.”

For supporters who are unable to donate money, there are other ways to give back to The Salvation Army on Giving Tuesday. The nonprofit is also encouraging individuals and families to sign up as volunteer bellringers by visiting registertoring.com, where they have an option to choose a traditional, two-hour session at a physical red kettle site or participate in a virtual bellringing shift where they can raise funds in the comfort of their own home.
