"I Know That God is Working for Me Through The Salvation Army."

Margarete had nowhere to turn. Long retired and determined to stay in the home she had lived in for over 40 years, the Detroit resident had overdue energy bills that she could not pay. “I was having a hard time sleeping because of the stress,” says the former certified registered nurse anesthetist. “I have always been a hardworking, independent woman, but I found myself in a place where I really needed help.”

After learning about The Salvation Army’s Services from a friend, she met with a caseworker earlier this month at the Detroit Temple Corps Community Center and applied for the aid she needed. Once she found out she was approved for assistance with utilities, she was elated. “I am so, so thankful. I know that God is working for me through The Salvation Army,” she says.

Now 84 years old, Margarete bought her house in Detroit in 1976 with the intention of having her mother live with her. Now, all of her family members have passed away. “I’m like my mother – I worked hard for what I have. But making ends meet has only gotten harder with the pandemic. That’s why The Salvation Army’s help has meant so much to me. I don’t know who else I could count on for help other than them.”
