Passionate Metro Detroit Bell Ringer Brings the Joy of Christmas Every Year
“I used to see Salvation Army bell ringers around Christmastime, and I figured you had to be part of some special club to ring for them. I didn’t know anyone could ring – and I was so happy when I found out that I could!”
When Pam Callan describes her experience as a bell ringer for The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit, her eyes light up, and she starts shaking imaginary bells. “I always use two – one’s just not enough for me,” she says with a smile. “Sometimes, I’ll bring my own sleigh bells, and I’ll usually dance to Christmas music. I go all out!”
Pam describes bell ringing as an outing that she and her 21 year old daughter enjoy together, and is excited to get one of her nieces involved this year as well. “Over the years, I’ve been amazed by the ongoing generosity of people,” she says. “When they see a need, people in Metro Detroit just respond and help as much as they can. That’s why I want to see more bell ringers out this year! When people see ringers at the kettle, they realize they need give.”
Pam has displayed a tremendous example by increasing her bell ringing hours year after year, and has set her goal at 40 hours at the kettle for 2021. “I found my purpose. I want to be productive with my spare time, and with The Salvation Army, I’m making that happen,” says Pam. “I remember after I signed up online for my very first bell ringing shift, I was nervous about how people would react. I didn’t want to get too excited! But I loved it so much that I signed up for additional shifts. Bell ringing gives me joy. My brass bell cracked last year because I rang so much!”
