National Donut Day: A Celebration of Service and Sweet Treats

Jun 4, 2021

To everyone who made National Donut Day a success – our volunteers, staff, The Looney Baker, and everyone at TCF Center – thank you! The roots of National Donut Day stretch back to World War 1, and we were delighted to continue the tradition this year by serving healthcare workers, the Detroit Police Department, the National Guard, the city of Detroit logistics team, and those receiving COVID-19 vaccines. We hope that each of the 35 dozen donuts served remind our community of our dedication to help those in need in metro Detroit.

"As the City of Detroit’s designated vaccine distribution site, TCF Center has done essential work to keep families safe and healthy," said Major Timothy Meyer, general secretary, metro Detroit area commander and regional chief operating officer for The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division. Major Meyer served as the media spokesperson during the event. "The Salvation Army is inspired by these mass vaccination efforts and is honored to serve those who continue to serve the community during this difficult time."

In addition to celebrating Donut Day, The Salvation Army is supporting the community during the pandemic by working with Central City Integrated Health (CCIH) and Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) to distribute vaccines to Detroiters affected by racial and economic disparities.
