Salvation Army Family Thrift Stores to Reopen on June 8
DETROIT (June 5, 2020) – The Salvation Army Southeast Michigan Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) will reopen most of its southeast Michigan Family Thrift Stores in a limited capacity on Monday, June 8.
Family Thrift Stores will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. On Wednesdays, stores will open early with two hours from 9 to 11 a.m. dedicated for seniors, vulnerable adults, pregnant individuals and immunocompromised shoppers.
The nonprofit is closely following guidelines issued from government officials, the state and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The following reopening plan has been put in place to keep employees and customers safe:
All employees will have their temperature taken at the beginning of every shift and will wear PPE.
Plexiglass is installed at each cash register with contactless payment options available.
Stores will be sanitized regularly, as well as cleaning the cash register area after every customer.
Face masks or coverings will be required for every shopper over the age of 2.
Fitting rooms will be temporarily closed.
All donations will be quarantined for 72 hours before employees begin processing them for the sales floor.
“With the State of Michigan’s “Stay Home, Stay Safe” executive order lifted, The Salvation Army Family Thrift Stores will resume business while protecting the safety of our employees and shoppers,” said Envoy Jacqulynn Idzior, The Salvation Army ARC assistant administrator. “We’re excited to reopen the store, not only to offer great deals to the community, but to continue funding our Adult Rehabilitation Center.”
Proceeds from metro Detroit Family Thrift Stores benefit The Salvation Army Southeast Michigan Adult Rehabilitation Center’s independently funded, 180-day residential rehabilitation program for men and women, which has continued to be operational during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Donations of gently used clothing, linens, household appliances, furniture, toys, shoes, purses and housewares are being accepted at select Salvation Army Family Thrift Store Donation Centers from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Donation centers remain contactless and will continue to do so during this time.

About The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center
Founded in 1883, The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) is dedicated to helping substance abusing adults bridge the gap on the road to recovery. The ARC provides men and women a holistic faith-based approach to drug and alcohol rehabilitation at its campus in Detroit. With capacity to serve more than 250 program participants, the 180-365-day residential program emphasizes behavioral modification to replace self-defeating habits with more productive, meaningful activities. Residents move at their own pace through journaling; group and one-on-one counseling; work therapy; and classes on chemical dependency, relapse prevention, anger management and more. Completely self-funded, the ARC draws its entire operating budget from the revenue of its 31 Salvation Army thrift stores located in Southeast Michigan.
