Spring in Northern Michigan

While it may finally feel like spring in Lower Michigan, parts of Northern Michigan are still dealing with freezing temperatures, snow, and no power. Even though it has been more than a week since last week’s generational ice storm devastated the area, there are countless downed trees and power lines. And according to some news reports, the storm could cost businesses, local government, and homeowners millions for years to come.

Salvation Army Emergency Response

The Salvation Army Great Lakes Division is continuing to coordinate relief efforts with Corps/Community Centers and Service Extensions in Alpena, Bay City, Big Rapids, Cadillac, Dearborn Heights, Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids, Petoskey, Plymouth, and Traverse City, providing meals to shelters, first responders and line workers. A special thank you to McDonalds who has donated $2,000 in Arch cards to distribute to first responders. Since services began on March 29, The Salvation Army has provided 7991 meals, 7457 drinks, 7207 snacks, 2449 food boxes, 268 cases/gallons of water, 1399 volunteer hours, 158 Emotional and Spiritual Care contacts and distributed cots, blankets, hygiene kits, gift cards, gas vouchers and more.

Reaching Out to Remote Areas

As people return to what is left of their homes, The Salvation Army is receiving an overwhelming number of requests for social services assistance. Many corps are also reaching out to rural areas to those still unable to travel. Captain Greg Bock is driving to Cheboygan County every day, now traveling door to door to remote locations, providing meals and other supplies to those in need.

Prayers and Appreciation

Please keep all of those impacted in Northern Michigan in your thoughts and prayers. Your generosity helps us provide hope and resources to those still battling to recover from the storm. The Salvation Army is committed to assist Northern Michigan as long as needed.
