Secret Santa Donates Rare Gold Coin for 10th Consecutive Year

Dec 1, 2022

On Tuesday night, November 29, a Salvation Army secret Santa dropped a rare, 1980 South African gold Krugerrand into a red kettle at the Kroger at Marter and Jefferson in St. Clair Shores – making it the 10th consecutive year a mysterious (and very generous!) individual has deposited a Krugerrand into a red kettle in Macomb County.

The Krugerrand, valued at an estimated $1,765, (according to Monex) will help The Salvation Army feed, clothe and support those in need. Donations to The Salvation Army go a long way – last year, The Salvation Army helped provide:

  • More than 2.1 million meals
  • More than 405,000 nights of shelter
  • Nearly 88,000 Christmas toys and gifts for children and seniors
  • Resolution of nearly 1,800 legal issues through the William Booth Legal Aid Clinic

If you would like to donate to The Salvation Army here are a few ways:

  • Texting GIFT to 24365
  • Using contactless Kettle Pay via Apple Pay, Google Pay, Venmo, and PayPal
  • Donating money via an online or physical red kettle
  • Donating Online
