Summer In the City Highlight: Tina's Story
For many of our neighbors in need, the COVID-19 pandemic added to the anxiety and difficult situations they were already dealing with. In January 2020, Tina was going through a divorce and trying to secure custody of her grandson. After hearing about The Salvation Army, she enrolled in the Pathway of Hope program in Dearborn Heights after receiving information about The Salvation Army’s services through Livonia Cares. She began to receive help from her caseworker at The Salvation Army to adopt her grandson, but COVID-19 brought the process to a crawl with court closures.
Undaunted, Tina decided to temporarily shift her focus to become more self-sufficient financially and emotionally. She paid off her bills, improved her credit, and attended counseling. She had been trying to help her daughter earn her GED, and The Salvation Army provided additional resources for her daughter’s education as well.
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Tina has made strides in the areas of life that she still had control over. Since she enrolled in the Pathway of Hope program, The Salvation Army has supported her needs from food assistance to giving a listening ear. As COVID-19 restrictions ease, Tina will resume her efforts to adopt her grandson. Thanks to the generosity of so many metro Detroiters, The Salvation Army is behind her every step of the way.
