The Metro Detroit Women's Auxiliary Brings a Heritage of Helping Those In Need
With a history of furthering our mission for over 100 years, the Metro Detroit Women’s Auxiliary has been a tremendous help to those in need. First formed in 1914 to help single mothers and their children, it was officially incorporated into The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit in 1997. This group of dedicated women seeks to support our work in any way they can, such as volunteering for the Radiothon phone bank, annually preparing one hundred personal care kits containing shampoo, toothpaste, washcloths, and more to the Bed & Bread club, and bell ringing at Laurel Park every year.
“They also do an amazing job fundraising,” says Major Judy Tekautz, Women’s Ministries Secretary for the Eastern Michigan Division. “They are ambassadors to our community, and our ministries have grown substantially because of their work.
Thirteen women strong, these volunteers have always risen to the occasion when help was needed. As volunteers, they have made thousands upon thousands of sandwiches for the Bed & Bread trucks, and every year they make 100 Easter baskets to be distributed through our corps community centers in Metro Detroit. As fundraisers, they have provided over $62,000 for different projects and programs in the last 3 years for anything that our corps need, from shelving units and freezers to funding for after school programs.
“It makes me feel good to do something for somebody else,” says Women’s Auxiliary president Emily Kazmierczak. “Especially if we are doing something to help children, like giving them hats and coats.”
