The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit to Keep Neighbors in Need Cool During Heatwave
– The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit reminds the public that their neighbors in need may need help staying cool during the scorching temperatures expected today lasting through the weekend. According to the National Weather Service, the heat index could top 110 degrees in metro Detroit. The nonprofit’s 13 corps community centers are serving as cooling centers during normal business hours, as well as providing utility assistance to those having difficulty paying their electric bills.
“The Salvation Army always has its doors open to protect our neighbors in need, especially our seniors and children,” said Major Tim Meyer, general secretary and metro Detroit area commander for The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division. “We provide essential social services such as food and shelter every day, but it’s crucial to offer a cool place to stay as we experience such severe high temperatures.”
