The Wayne Westland Corps Community Center Restores Hope for Christmas
The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on families across Metro Detroit, and Mary’s was no exception. The sole caretaker of her granddaughter, Mary could hardly afford the essentials for her home. Christmas of 2020 was fast approaching, and Mary wasn’t sure how she was going to make it through the holiday season.
“Then my granddaughter saw our neighbor across the street,” Mary says, “who is a van driver for The Salvation Army. She asked me if I would walk her across the street to give him her Christmas list and her picture; for some reason, she was convinced that he knew Santa! He told us about the help we could get at the Wayne Westland Corps Community Center, so we signed up for holiday assistance there. An anonymous donor adopted us, and what we received brought us so much joy!”
Soon, help was delivered to Mary’s door in the form of food, gift cards, towels, coats, boots, and a new wagon to play with. What was looking so bleak before became full of hope.
“The Salvation Army helps so many people, and everyone I know from there is so kind. They didn’t even know me before I asked for help, but they gave generously without hesitating. I know there are so many children like my granddaughter who would not have a Christmas without you.”
