The Weekly Word - A Devotion for the Week of November 6

Nov 3, 2023

The cross is a beacon of hope in our world of hurt and sorrow.

In this verse, Paul’s words to the Galatians still ring true to our lives today. He emphasizes the centrality of the cross in our faith journey and the transformative power it holds. We are dead in our sins, but Jesus was sent to save us from the penalty of sin.

At the beginning of the verse, Paul says, “But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.” This statement draws our attention to the rejection of all forms of complacency and our achievements. In a world consumed by the desire for recognition and success, this verse serves as a reminder that true fulfillment and purpose are found in Christ alone.

Paul continues by saying, “by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” Here, Paul is highlighting the transformative power of the cross. As Christians, our identity signifies a radical departure from the worldly desires that once held us captive. The cross marks a definitive break from a life of sin and self-centeredness.

Jesus dying on the cross was not just a historical event; it is a living reality that demands our attention and response. It calls us to a life of daily surrender and obedience, reminding us of the immense price paid for our redemption. In the light of the cross, we find forgiveness, reconciliation, and the promise of eternal life.

Let’s boast in the redemptive work of Christ and acknowledge the central place the cross has in our lives, sharing the love and grace that flows from this symbol of God’s unconditional love for His people.
