National Donut Day!

National Donut Day! Image

It’s time to celebrate the donut, for National Donut Day! As we celebrate all the goodness of donuts on June 2nd, we recognize, similar to other fun holidays, Donut Day has a much deeper meaning.

National Donut Day became a holiday thanks to The Salvation Army’s work during World War I. In 1938, The Salvation Army in Chicago celebrated the very first National Donut Day, honoring The Salvation Army’s “Donut Lassies” who traveled overseas to provide emotional and spiritual support, supplies, and other services to our troops on the front lines in France. The Lassies also provided fresh donuts and hot coffee to the trenches to boost morale and thank these soldiers for their service and sacrifice.

This year, to celebrate National Donut Day, The Salvation Army of La Crosse will be partnering with Kwik Trip to deliver donuts to several locations in the La Crosse area that assist and support Veterans.

Want to make a difference, too? Donut consumers have a chance to make their donut buying more special. For every donut bought at Linda’s Bakery, 190 E City Hwy 16 West Salem, Linda’s will be donating 50 cents toward The Salvation Army’s Make a House a Home Fund. With nearly 2,000 donuts sold last year, you have an opportunity to make your purchase count and support the Make a House a Home fund.

Make a House a Home is a program through The Salvation Army that supports individuals and families who have secured housing with necessities which can be hard to afford by providing a Welcome Home Basket. These baskets include cups, plates, silverware, towels, hand soap, dishwasher soap, garbage bags, mops, cleaning supplies, toilet paper, and more. Each basket costs about $47. The Salvation Army will be collecting donations of these basket items and have a virtual donation page. As a reminder, additional support is provided through our voucher program which allows individuals and families to obtain items from our Thrift Store.

National Donut Day is about enjoying delicious donuts and The Salvation Army invites you to remember the reason behind the sugar, flour, and smiles! The Salvation Army also invites you to be the favorite co-worker on June 2nd, so visit Linda’s Bakery and buy a dozen!

Thank a Veteran, visit Kwik Trip, buy Linda’s Donuts, do good, and have a great day!
