Donut Day 2021
It’s time for the sweetest day of the year, National Donut Day! As Americans celebrate all the gooey goodness of donuts on June 4, they may not know that, unlike other fun holidays, Donut Day has a deeper meaning.
National Donut Day became a holiday thanks to The Salvation Army’s work during World War I. In 1917, The Salvation Army began a mission to provide spiritual and emotional support for the U.S. soldiers fighting France. About 250 volunteers traveled overseas and set up small huts located near the front lines where they could give soldiers clothes, supplies, and baked goods. After discovering that serving baked goods would be difficult considering the conditions, volunteers began frying donuts in soldiers’ helmets. These tasty treats boosted morale and won the hearts of many soldiers. Nicknamed “Donut Lassies”, the women who served donuts to troops are often credited with popularizing the donut in the United States when the troops (nicknamed “doughboys”) returned home from war.
This year, to celebrate National Donut Day, The Salvation Army of La Crosse will be partnering with Dunkin’ to provide donuts to the community. Dunkin’ will be giving out a free classic donut with the purchase of any beverage through out the day. Also, from 7am-11am The Salvation Army will be at Dunkin' spending time outside with our Kettle Bells and volunteers sharing with the community about the history of The Salvation Army as well as the amazing community partners we work with.
This year we are also promoting a new fund during Donut Day– MAKE A HOUSE A HOME FUND. This fund helps support individuals and families who have just secured housing with necessities they cannot afford such as washer, dryer, welcome home basket cleaning supplies, cribs, strollers, mattresses, and other necessities. We are able to kick of this fund because of an anonymous donor who has pledged to match community donations up to $5,000. To make your dollar double go to our virtual donation page or come by Dunkin on June 4th for National Donut Day to donate!
