Tools for School begins for Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army in Lafayette.
By Ella Chew
LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — The Tools for School program is happening right now to help local kids through the Salvation Army.
This year the Salvation Army is adding a new initiative.
In previous years, businesses and individuals were able to donate school supplies.
However, this year you're also able to donate money through the Christmas in July campaign.
Right now roughly 1500 kids need school supplies in Tippecanoe County.
The Director of Social Service at the Lafayette Salvation Army, Briton Weise, says a $30 donation goes a long way.
"I was shocked last year with the turnout with just how many kids that are out there that need school supplies," said Weise. "So whatever we can do to give back and be a huge success would be great for our community."
The Christmas in July campaign is currently underway.
"It's our summer fundraiser and all of our proceeds from this fundraiser are going directly to Tools for School to help us purchase school supplies for kids going back to school next year," said Weise. "It helps us make sure that they have what they need to start the school year off right."
