About 15 percent of the homeless population is comprised of "chronically homeless" individuals. This means struggling neighbors are sleeping on the streets, in cars, staying with family or friends temporarily, or frequently moving from residence to residence. Each year, The Salvation Army provides over 10 million nights of lodging to those in need. Our homelessness prevention programs and shelters provide safe housing, food, and spiritual and practical support to families who have nowhere else to go.
Bed & Bread ClubMany of The Salvation Army's services ensure families have nutritious food to eat and safe place to sleep. Once the basics are covered, we support families with after-school programming, creative arts education, worship opportunities, and more. Help keep these programs available to those most in need by joining the Bed & Bread Club.
Coat DrivesThe Salvation Army partners with local organizations in Lake County, Indiana, and the Chicago Bears and Jewel-Osco to collect new or gently used winter coats for families. This year, our goal is to collect 25,000+ coats for families in need.
Homelessness Prevention & Emergency Assistance ProgramsThe Salvation Army provides emergency assistance to help with mortgage/rent, utility bills, clothing, medication bills, and other needs in order to keep families in their homes. For more information or support: contact your local Corps Community Center, call the emergency assistance hotline 773.205.3520, or learn more online.
