Honoring the Legacy of a Dog Who Did The Most Good
Every Christmas season for seven years, David Rokusek of Crystal Lake, Illinois, drove his best friend, Leonardo, to his volunteer gig as a Salvation Army Red Kettle Bell Ringer. But David did not mind driving because he knew the donations Leonardo raised while ringing at the Red Kettle provided critical social services to his neighbors who needed love and hope.
But also, David had to drive because Leonardo was a beautiful Bernese Mountain Dog without a license. Leonardo could be found ringing at the Hobby Lobby in Crystal Lake with his very own bell while wearing a classic red Salvation Army apron. On colder days, Leonardo stayed warm and looked even cuter, wearing a festive plaid Salvation Army blanket customized just for him.
During Leonardo's time supporting the Salvation Army, he volunteered for over 150 hours and raised $10,000. Local businesses would often do a corporate match of each dollar Leonardo raised.
Leonardo's impact stretched beyond the funds to help provide life-changing services to neighbors who need them most. As a certified therapy dog, Leonardo brought comfort and smiles to shoppers passing by the Red Kettle. But he also found joy in all the petting and treats they gave him.
Sadly, just after this past Christmas, Leonardo passed away.
Leonardo's kindness and generosity were felt by many people in McHenry County who needed a smile when walking by a Salvation Army Red Kettle or the family at risk of housing insecurity who found a safe and warm home.
With gratitude, The Salvation Army Corps Community Center of Crystal Lake honors Leonardo and his legacy of 'doing the most good.'
