On Thursday, July 11, The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit joined the Detroit Tigers for their celebration of Christmas in July.
The festive theme day featured Santa’s in Hawaiian shirts, Christmas movie references, and Santa hats galore. Because of The Salvation Army’s association with Christmas, its presence was the perfect addition.
“We wanted to bring our partner The Salvation Army in to celebrate with us. So, we invited the brass band to play and spread awareness for The Salvation Army during Christmas for July,” said Haley Hinch, Activation Coordinator, Corporate Partnerships Detroit Tigers – Illich Sports + Entertainment.
The brass band, which was a combination of The Salvation Army Brass Band Ensemble and the Five Lakes Silver Band, played festive tunes such as “we wish you a merry Christmas,” “Jingle Bells,” and other favorites. Passersby stopped to take pictures and enjoy the performance.

In addition to playing music, the event helped spread the word about the important work done by The Salvation Army. TVs around the stadium displayed QR codes for ballpark patrons to donate.
The Detroit Tigers have been a generous partner in other ways as well. They donated auction items for events that helped raise funds to send children to camp and for the William Booth Legal Aid Clinic.
They are also offering Tigers’ alumni appearances, one of which will happen later this month at Sports Camp at Echo Grove Camp and Retreat Center. The appearance is sure to bring a smile to kids’ faces.

The Salvation Army is grateful for the generous support the Detroit Tigers has given, which will help us feed, shelter, and support Detroit’s most vulnerable, as well as inspiring children at camp.
If you would like to join the Detroit Tigers in supporting these important programs, you can volunteer or donate to The Salvation Army in Metro Detroit.
