There Is A Free Lunch

At this little known Kansas City lunch spot, the menu changes every day. Reaching the entrance requires a trip through multiple doors and down a flight of stairs. You won’t find it rated on Yelp, or be locked out from reservations via Open Table, though. You don’t need reservations. In fact, you won’t even need cash for your meal.

The Salvation Army Eastside Community Center is home to the Beacon of Hope Café, serving lunch every weekday. To anyone who walks in. For free.

The food is simple, nourishing, and hot. A welcome respite for people for who it may be their only meal of the day. Major Janice Love, the corps commander, makes it her mission to ensure every lunch served is enjoyed.

“I like cooking, and I like to know that when they leave here, I know they got a full meal,” Love said.

Hundreds of people will sit down to a meal at Beacon of Hope Café every month. More than just a lunch, they’ll find a warm place to sit down. A smiling face to greet them. And, a community welcoming them with open arms.

Your support means the Beacon of Hope Café will continue to be there for anyone in need, every time they sit down for lunch.
